STARTING OUT

The first thing you are going to find out when you start reading about "paleo" is that no two people agree on exactly on what paleo is. The term gets used a lot, and has come to mean different things to different people. I mention this a few times throughout this website, but it is important that you take note of that and don't get discouraged by the different information you will come across. The basic foundation of the paleo lifestyle is to eat wholesome, natural foods that our bodies were designed to consume, similar to what our ancestors did many years ago prior to an abundance of processed foods being available. Because each individual follows a slightly different plan, paleo can mean eliminating all of some of the following things:
Grains
Legumes
Dairy
Sugar
Processed Foods
Alcohol
You will see a lot of recipes, even on this site, for things that are "borderline" paleo. They have all the paleo ingredients, but nutritionally are not the healthiest options to fuel your body. Paleo pancakes, paleo cupcakes and paleo ice cream are items most experts will recommend that you eat in moderation. Having said that, cooking foods similar to what you are used to eating makes the transition to paleo much easier for those who are just starting out. I make fresh fruits and vegetables as well as quality proteins the staple in my diet, and then incorporate the occasional "treat" to enjoy every now and then.
The paleo lifestyle expands beyond just food comsumption and touches on areas like the importance of sleep and exercise. The resources section has a list of great books that you can read that will touch on all of these areas, and help you find what works best for you and your family. You can also take a look at my list of items to stock your cupboard with and some tips for beginners to get you started on the right track.
