My Favorite Paleo Products - Part 1

5/31/2013

I am often asked what my favorite paleo products are, or which brands I prefer to use over others. I decided to write a post about just that subject, because I have a few brands that I prefer over all others, and they truly make a difference in my cooking and baking. A really big difference!

Below is Part 1 of my favorite brands and products that I believe to be an essential part of my paleo lifestyle, and that I just can't live without!
Picture

Honeyville Farms Almond Flour

Honeyville Farms is my favorite almond flour to use. I actually wont use any other brands because I have found this one to be far superior to the rest. The flour is very finely ground and produces much better results, especially in baking, than any other almond flour I have tried. The price for a 5 lb. bag is very reasonable and actually comes out to $7 per pound as compared to $10 or more for some other brands.

Red Boat Fish Sauce

Red Boat fish sauce is both the purest and best tasting that I have tried. It is made of fresh caught wild black anchovies and sea salt and is not processed, making it paleo friendly, unlike many of the other brands on the market. It also does not contain added water, preservatives or MSG. I use this frequently in my cooking and always have an extra bottle on hand in case I run out.
Picture

Y.S. Eco Bee Farms Raw Honey

Using the wrong raw honey can make a BIG difference in your recipes. I have tried some brands that were just horrible tasting, and poor quality honey will really impact the flavor of your cooking and baking. I have two favorite raw honey brands that I will use. One is Tropical Traditions, which is not processed and tastes incredible. The other brand is Y.S. Eco Bee Farms Raw Honey which is also unheated, unfiltered and unpasteurized and tastes just as amazing.

Sea Tangle Kelp Noodles

Sea Tangle Kelp Noodles are another item I always keep stocked in my fridge. They are made only from kelp, salt extracted from seaweed, and water. They are gluten-free and can be used in so many different recipes. I like to toss them together with some vegetables, protein and an easy sauce when I am short on time and need a healthy and delicious meal.
Picture

Amy & Brian Coconut Juice

If you haven't heard me mention this before...I used to HATE coconut water. Every brand I tried just tasted gross and I wanted nothing to do with it. That was...of course...until I tried Amy & Brian coconut juice. It is so much better than all others I have tried, and I have to keep these stocked on hand at all times. Everyone in my family loves them and we go through them pretty quickly.

Coconut Secret Coconut Aminos

Before paleo, I used soy sauce quite a bit in my cooking...marinades, dressings, stir-fry, you name it. Now that I do not use soy products, I had to find an alternative. Coconut secret coconut aminos are made from raw organic sap and sea salt, and the taste is almost identical to soy sauce. This product allows you to still get the essential amino acids that our bodies need, but in a paleo and gluten-free way.

Dragonfly Sweet Potato Vermicelli

Dragonfly Sweet Potato Vermicelli are made of only sweet potato starch and water, and make a nice filler for a meal with proteins and vegetables. They are not an everyday food, but are a nice treat to have when you are craving noodles. I only use a small amount with my meals and the bag lasts a very long time, making them a good value, plus they are delicious and have a nice texture.
Picture

Natural Value Coconut Milk

This coconut milk is made from pure coconut extract and water, and does not contain any added guar gum, preservatives or stabilizers like most of the other coconut milk brands. It works well in both cooking and baking and has a nice thickness to it, despite not having any additives. The product is also packaged in BPA-free cans, which is an added bonus.

Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil

Tropical Traditions Gold Label Coconut Oil is by far the best coconut oil I have used. All of my cooking and baked goods turn out better when using this product. It is unrefined and no chemicals or high-heat treatments are used in its preparation. Tropical Traditions frequently has sales on their coconut oil and other great products, which makes it an even better deal!

Spiral Vegetable Slicer

This is a can't live without item for me. I can't stress enough how much I love this thing!!! It took over the spot on my counter where my toaster used to be. This tool allows you to turn many types of vegetables into noodles., my favorite being zucchini. This is great for people like myself who enjoy pasta and want a healthy substitute.

I can't speak to if most of these are available in the stores, hopefully some others may know, but some items are available through shipping.

I believe that the spiral slicer and Y.S. Eco Bee Farms Raw Honey is available through Amazon and that Tropical Traditions ships the coconut oil and raw honey to Canada.

The kelp noodles are available at a few stores in Canada per the Sea Tangle website http://kelpnoodles.com/:
Green Things - Guelph, Ontario
Upaya Naturals - Barrie, Ontario
Loving the Planet - Sydney, BC
Organic Island - Pender Island, BC
Rawthentic Eatery - Qualicum Beach, BC

Amy & Brian coconut juice is available in certain stores in Western Canada per their wesbite: http://amyandbriannaturals.com

Hope that helps!

I just found out how many "paleo products" are not available in Canada! I think we need to start a movement to get more of the good stuff available for you guys!

I love knowing Paleo chef's pantry items.. I have several of these same items.. but was wondering where you buy locally.. as I too live in San Diego.. can you tell us where you get the fish sauce, coconut milk and water, and the Coconut Aminos (my Sprouts doesnt have it anymore). I do a lot of ordering from Amazon for many of my paleo friendly staples.. but it is nice to have local suppliers too.

HI fellow San Diegan! I either shop at Whole Foods for the coconut aminos, coconut milk and water or Jimbos Naturally which is closer to my house and has a lot of great paleo friendly products. I order the fish sauce (and many other things) off of Amazon because I have Amazon prime and the prices are usually very reasonable :-) I haven't found the fish sauce in a local store yet but I keep looking!

The tropical traditions honey link is bad.
We are fortunate to live in a rural area and buy local honey. Very important especially for those with allergies to local plants, as the honey made from them is a great 'antidote'. It tastes different depending on what is in bloom at the time.

I have found the red boat fish sauce, kelp noodles and sweet potato noodles at my local asian market. The prices are MUCH cheaper than Amazon and it is always a fun adventure.

I have found the kelp noodles at a local "natural foods" store and the sweet potato noodles at my local Asian market as well, but I am still on the hunt for a store that sells the Red Boat fish sauce. Luckily I have two huge bottles in my cupboard so I am stocked up for a little while! :-)

This is great info. I'm always curious what others keep in their paleo pantries since still on the newer side of the lifestyle. I had been looking for the Honeyville brand in my area without any success until today! Costco! Yes Costco. So excited

Marilyn, my favorite is Wellshire. I get it at Whole Foods. It has no nitrites or nitrates and is uncured. They have a beef bacon that I love the best, although I use any kind, pork or turkey too. Turkey is too tough for my taste, but ok in dishes. Applegate is good too.
